Application Information

Job Postings

The City of Modesto advertises available positions in the Sunday edition of the Modesto Bee and on the 24-hour Job Line (577-5498), and on this website.

Final Filing Dates

Each recruitment is open for a certain filing period. Applicants should take notice of filing deadlines. Applications will not be accepted after 5:00 p.m. on the final filing date unless an extension has been posted by the City of Modesto. (Postmarks are not accepted.)

Minimum Qualifications

Each job posting provides minimum qualifications as outlined to include experience and training guidelines and any additional professional certifications or licenses.

The City of Modesto defines “accredited college or university” as an institution of higher learning and must be listed on the United States Department of Education Database of Accredited Post-Secondary Institutions and Programs website http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation. Credits earned from colleges, universities and institutions listed as an accredited institution on this website will be considered as part of the educational component of the minimum qualifications for a classification.

For many classifications, the City may allow the conversion of additional directly related work experience to substitute for a college degree, using a formula of two years experience equal to one year of college coursework (30 units). For example, the equivalency to a four year college degree requires eight years of directly related work experience.

The following options apply to the evaluation of college degrees from countries outside the United States:

  • Educational background from a foreign country may be evaluated by an accredited United States college or university listed on the U.S. Department of Education Database of Accredited Post-Secondary Institutions and Programs website.
  • A copy of the foreign credential evaluation verification must be attached to the employment application.
  • Applicants who do not provide this verification will be eliminated from further consideration.

It is the responsibility of each applicant to prove to the satisfaction of the City that the applicant meets specific education requirements listed on the job announcement. This explanation has been developed for informational purposes only and does not guarantee that an applicant meets the requirements of the job. If you require further clarification regarding this information, please contact our Human Resources Department at (209) 577-5402.

Resumés

A City of Modesto application for employment must be submitted for each job opening prior to the final filing date. Applicants will be assessed on the application materials submitted. Resumes are an important screening tool. Applications that are not accompanied by resumes may be more difficult to assess. Do not substitute any part of the application form with the words “SEE RESUME.”
